An illustration is an interpretation or visual explanation of a concept, text or process, designed for integration in published media such as flyers, magazines, posters, books, video games, animations and films. Here we are going to discuss in-depth about illustration styles. So let's have a look at the types of modern illustration styles and techniques.

Type of Modern Illustration Style and Techniques

The making of illustration style and technique changed over time, as materials are also changing and evolving. Artists relied on paper, pencils, paints, but with digital era evolution, even artists accustomed to traditional mediums and materials started working digitally using the 2D and 3D software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, 3DMax and Maya.

An illustration is divided into two large groups:

1. Traditional Illustration Styles

2. Modern Illustration Styles

[1] Traditional Illustration Styles

Traditional Illustration has been around from the time cave people began drawing using little stick figures on their cave walls. While it comes a long way from there, Illustration is a significant way of expression and communication. Today, we are going through with some of the traditional forms of illustration technique. For insight into modern illustration techniques.

One of the oldest types of Illustration Styles was hand-drawn. Another popular technique was:

1. Woodcutting Illustration

This is one of the oldest techniques that was popular during the middle age and gained fame after the invention of the printing press. Carved blocks became important when books started to be published and printed in large quantities since carved block illustrations could be used to create illustrations that were printed using the same cutter. Artists are still using this technique who wants a natural or rough texture to their work.

2. Watercolour

Watercolor Illustration mainly used in creating shades and effects by adding water to design different transparencies of the pigmented color. There is a lot of depth and detailing which is obtained from this technique. It is used for prominently for paintings, children's books, fashion illustrations and illustrations that need to be light and airy. It is a simple way to add color merges them and make visual stand out.

3. Pen and Ink Illustration

Ink illustrations are prominent in situations where the illustrator wants to have precise, accurate work and have high contrast between the elements they are using. Most illustrations make use of only one color and different tints of it on a plane surface texture to get work that is monochrome but highly detailed. Fine lines and different line qualities characterize this medium. Different lines, dots and densities are used to obtain these effects. This technique is also used for technical drawing or diagrammatic representations.

[2] Modern Illustration Style

With the growths in modern technology and the increasing importance of Illustration in various fields, illustration techniques have gained an entirely new array of styles. Now there is various software available that can be used to achieve different illustration styles, including Photoshop, 3Ds Max, Inkscape, Illustrator and so on.

1. Freehand Digital Illustrations

This technique is similar to the sort of illustrations that are done on canvas, paper or other similar traditional media. The only difference lies in the entire process or at least most of it, being digital and done using a stylus or pen tool. With this technique you can access to a multitude of different colors, tools, brush presets are easily undone and edits and changes can be made.

Shading and blending are usually much more comfortable in digital Illustration and different effects can be created.

With the rising number of stylus and tablet combinations and styluses made exclusively for mobile phones which can be found in the market, precise and detailed illustrations of this kind are growing rapidly. They are used for storyboarding, illustrating books, recreational art, in animation, in different design processes and so on. Illustrations made digitally by freehand methods come in raster formats and can be zoomed only to a particular limit before they begin to appear pixilated and blurry.

2. Vector Graphics

Vector Graphics are computer graphic images that are defined using 2D point and connected using curves and lines to make polygons and various shapes.

The specific point is given at each point coordinate axes of the work plan, which helps to determine the direction that will be taken by the path. These graphics are produced for more zooming and scaling functions before they start to appear pixilated. They can be enlarged to a larger extent before they lose quality. It is mainly used in creating illustrations for the web such as logos, posters and so on. They are characterized by clear outlines and more defined nature.
